Hair after forty, and why it feels different

Falling oestrogen changes hair as much as it changes skin. Strands get finer, the scalp produces less oil, and hair that used to feel thick now feels dry at the ends and flat at the roots at the same time. Most women respond by washing less and conditioning more, which helps, but the products matter too.

Sulphates strip the little natural oil a mature scalp still makes. Silicones coat the hair so it feels smooth on day one and heavier by day three, and they build up. Our range avoids both. The shampoos clean gently enough to use every other day, the Rapunzel conditioner is for length and ends rather than the scalp, and the leave in serum goes on damp ends only.

Give any change six weeks. Hair that has been silicone coated for years takes a while to look like itself again.

Why has my hair got thinner and drier since menopause?

Falling oestrogen reduces both the diameter of each hair and the oil the scalp produces, so hair feels finer and drier at once. Gentle sulphate free washing, conditioning the lengths rather than the roots, and a leave in serum on the ends is the routine that helps most. Sudden or patchy loss is worth taking to a GP.

Are sulphate free shampoos actually better?

For a drier mature scalp, yes. Sulphates are effective detergents but they remove more oil than an older scalp can replace, which leaves hair squeaky and then straw like. Sulphate free shampoos lather less, which takes getting used to, and clean perfectly well.

How do I use a hair serum?

On damp, towel dried hair, one or two pumps through the ends and mid lengths only, never the roots. Then dry as normal. Used on the scalp it makes hair look greasy without doing anything useful.
