A waterless bakuchiol serum for skin that found retinol too harsh. Bon Appetit pairs isolated bakuchiol with vitamins C and E in a base of cold pressed Siberian pine and borage seed oils. One pump at night, over slightly damp skin.
What bakuchiol actually does
Bakuchiol is a plant compound pressed from babchi seed, often called plant based retinol. In a randomised, double blind trial published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2019, it performed comparably to 0.5% retinol on fine lines and pigmentation over twelve weeks, with significantly less scaling and stinging reported. It is a gentler route to the same destination, not a stronger one.
This formula uses the isolated bakuchiol molecule rather than babchi seed oil, which carries only a trace of it.
Who it suits
- Mature skin that has lost some firmness or bounce
- Anyone who abandoned retinol because of peeling, redness or stinging
- Sensitive skin, provided you patch test first
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your GP before using any new active
How to use it
Evenings. Cleanse, apply one pump to skin that is still slightly damp, then follow with a cream or oil. Thinnest to thickest, always. A single pump covers the whole face, and because the formula is waterless, more will not help and will feel heavy.
If your skin reacts easily, use it every other night for the first fortnight, then daily. Bakuchiol does not raise sun sensitivity the way retinol does, but a daily SPF is still the best anti ageing habit there is.

Delivery and Returns
Orders are packed and posted from the UK within one working day. Royal Mail takes 2 to 4 working days, and delivery is free over £40. Unopened products can be returned within 30 days.
How to Use
Cleanse first, then apply to skin that is still slightly damp, which is what traps the water in rather than trying to add it later. Serums go on before creams, always thinnest to thickest.
Vitamin C in the morning. Bakuchiol and rich creams in the evening. If your skin reacts easily, use any new active every other day for the first fortnight, then daily.
A pea sized amount is enough for the whole face. These are waterless formulas, so using more does not help and will feel heavy.
